MILD LIFE (Millett-Todteman)
My alarm clock wakes me up in the morning.
My alarm clock gets me up. Right at 5.
I make my bed and open the back door to the garden.
I go down the hall to the bathroom and piss.
I put on quiet, relaxing music, and check my email
I always use the middle stall.
while having coffee and a bagel for breakfast. I have
Back in my room, plug in my toaster and
to leave for the office by 6:40, so I plan my day, and
have breakfast. Sometimes, I have orange
gather the items I need into my bag. I check my wallet,
juice left over. I eat at my desk.
making sure I have money and cheques.
I put on my jeans, grab a clean t-shirt and
After I take my medication, I arrange my lunch
grab my jacket. It's about 5:20 by now. I
and wash the dishes. Before I water the plants,
ask with Jim's if there's any messages.
I feed the cat. Then I shave, I usually remember to
Sometimes they call at 4 to tell me I have

the day off. Then I leave to catch,
I ask myself if I shaved, plotted my daily feelings,
my ride. He's always playing the morning news,
remembered my cell phone, remembered my bag,
so that's how I keep in touch with the world.

Place those wings on his head
put that silver on his chest
the silver is a sign
his sins have been forgiven, so he can finally rest

The wings on his head
in the middle of the air

Before he left, he had the sense to confess
Place those wings on his head

He considered treason, but then prayed for his soul
the spirit moved him
he's got liberty on his shoulders
silver on his chest
and place those wings on his head

He saw the devil on his porch
devil knocked on his door
but the spirit moved the devil out of the way
Place those wings on his head
put that silver on his chest

The wings on his head
in the middle of the air

lower him beneath that tomb
where the soil is cold and peaceful
lower him down
and there's nothing better he can ask for
Place those wings on his head
put that silver on his chest

He's got protection
from the angels in heaven
from the angels fighting armageddon
Place those wings on his head
put that silver on his chest

Sec. 1:
q: what are you interested in?
a: freedom. if chaos is a sideline of that i can deal with it.

q: you aren't afraid of chaos?
a: what you see as chaos, I might see as a decent Tuesday night.

q: how would you change the government?
a: that's not for me to decide. 265 million people have to be part of
getting it together.

q: you don't really think you can affect change on that large a scale?
a: sure. and if it's not possible, it's worth working for.

q: how would you change the military?
a: i'd end it.

q: what about soldiers?
a: they can live outside of tanks.

q: don't you believe in defending yourself?
a: well, they don't defend me.

q: I would say that not only do they defend you, they die for you!
a: I didn't ask for that. I wouldn't ask or expect anyone or anything to die for me.

q: don't you have any respect for them at all?
a: yeah, if they put down their guns and flew home, I'd respect them.

q: that's impossible!
a: is it? to fight a war you have to have people fighting it. none of those people have to be fighting it. they can leave.

q: and as soon as they put down their guns and leave, they'll get killed by the enemy!
a: they wouldn't be enemies anymore. there would be no reason to shoot them. it would be an empty gesture.

q: don't you have enemies?
a: I have people I prefer to not be around. but I'm not gonna take them out.

Sec. 2:
"having to listen to them twist facts for their own uses is incredibly and deeply frustrating"

"we've been working downstate to try to change this all around"

"my views have been changing in regard to the death penalty"

"I can't be for pro-life and against the death penalty at the same time"

"we don't like him, but we do support him"

"my work is geared to help people to help themselves"

"I support their positions on business"

"we believe real sympathy is in not accepting laziness"

"I travel all over the country, and people feel very disconnected from what's happening"

"no one wants to be told what to do"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

"I would say I'm in no way a moderate"

1. Today I saw a sprinkler laying on a lawn. I traced the spray of water to a large bush, maybe 10 foot high. In the center of the bush was a cardinal, taking a bath.

2. Please do not ask if Liz and I will get married. We will not get wed until gay marriage is legal.

THE ALUMINUM FARM

THE ALUMINUM FARM

by Richard Millett

Contents:
I Never Knew How White I Was
Speeding Into A Red Light
Aluminum Farm

Duplicato
Son, That Baby Is Dead
Yours, Is

plus: English translations of "Duplicate", "Yours, Is" and "Son, That Baby Is Dead"

I NEVER KNEW HOW WHITE I WAS
I used to think I possessed grace/could stand in motion with grace/could exist in a wheel of grace

schedules uncoiled/elastic transgression/spoken demonstration/its not an insult/and you say its wasteful

"WACO, Texas - A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning after adjusting a nearby microphone while standing in water, a church employee said.
The Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, author of Understand God’s Will was stepping into the baptistery as he reached out for the microphone, which produced an electric shock, said University Baptist Church community pastor Ben Dudley.
Water in a baptistery usually reaches above the waist, said Byron Weathersbee, interim university chaplain at Baylor University.
Lake was pronounced dead at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, nursing supervisor Pat Mahl said. "

How long it may last cannot be known, but it is certain that resistance will be protracted to the limits of human possibility.

SPEEDING INTO A RED LIGHT
They don't know about my addictions
they shouldn't speak as if they do
I get sick without their opinions
I feel great relief when they provide
valid, contradictory proof

I Keep My Feet Straight
Then Came The Fish
I Pledge My Devotion Of Abstinence
The Titanium Is Parallel
Like My Mind To The Lathe
My Heart Is A Piston
My Feet & Tongue, Triggers
My Will Is A Safe
Underneath 20 Feet Of Cement & Railroad Track
What Has Your Contribution Been?

Out, out, out- don't disrupt my headset, don't distract me with lights
I want action and motion, not your plans
I defeat these shrugging cretins
I accept what is certain

Out tonight, only dealing in facts
eliminating any glacial pace on my path
the cocked gun on my lap
is a reminder to me
to keep perspective
when looking for beauty
in the land of the free

Holy smokes, that tower blew up quick!
Well, there's no time to check if anyone innocent is trapped inside of it.
I have to clear this fucking area, pronto, or they won't let me stay at the hotel tonight, and I'll have to sleep outside- fuck that, I aint no new recruit.

you and I in black
sloshing through the lake
underneath the forest preserve
trickling up our legs
they dont know what we do

private joy in a quiet moment
drinking pepsi in my tent
the moonlight on your cylinders
and I in dark green
lets me know what a wonderful world it can be
Im first/out out out/out, now/me/im first

ALUMINUM FARM
On the aluminum farm
we speak in turns
anyone caught lying
gets their clothing burned

we waive our pay
we work all day
they let us choose
not to pray

On the aluminum farm
we catch a bruise
line up to get tattooed

we walk in quiet
out of the way
we know we're lucky
livin in this place

on the aluminum farm
we sheer the sheep
hide our weapons
before we go to sleep

salute the man
up in the tower
if we're humble
then we get a shower

on the aluminum farm
they give us guns
target practice
under the morning sun

we hear the speech
and we agree
cuz this land was made
for them and me

THE FIRST FOUR YEARS

PHILADELPHIA
I was in Philadelphia waiting for the maid
I glanced out the window
down at kids younger than me
looking like I did at 16
comparing biographies
completing each others fragments
exchanging glasses
freezing enzymes on magnets

I stopped by the swimming pool and
flicked a few crumbs out the water
the convention got post-poned into a parade
the police mis-placed the exit
and were unsympathetic
to the problems they had failed to protect

Like a dinosaur shell
had fallen and cracked the liberty bell
whose continued drone
quit cell phones and traffic
and didn’t cease until a line
was cut to the Bryn Mawr bricks
which had gone unrestored since 1936

And Carrie, you saw the same kids I did
you knew it had come to this
Carrie, hold out yr hand
I want to re-print the promises
cuz what was necessary became arbitrary

I was watching a movie
with a chapter of valleys separating the tombs
and paintings that could be pointed to
and the assertion to dance
cuz that’s when “they” cant aim at you

And you’d been waiting since 1934
sleeping at hepburn’s door
while I wanted to be related to Bette Davis

Carrie, hold out yr hand
cuz I don’t want entertainment
I want some dark victory to grace us

Those kids were rendered wet
and recruited with the tourettes
of decade old prints that ground every context
dull till there was no place left
to speak your peace with
anything else than facts

Carrie, hold out yr hand
cuz the distractions arent safe
hold out yr hand
your stage is my private place

ANIMALS
You soak the carpet in linco
scratching the hair off your arms

You kicked out the stranger,
ridiculed the superstitions he held onto

You lie restless
staying clean, wiping sweat
And I think about this quite a lot
pressing the grooves of my fingerprints
into my forehead
sending an idea that reminds us both

hell
there was another plan
in crumbles of sugar

i saw wild motion
i hunched myself towards it

i looked at it happening
it felt like a parade
elephants awake and gallant

i had been so nerve stacked
the loops of my heart strings
matched my eyelashes

i wore a royal blue jacket
with gold sleeves

there was a swirl that came from the trumpets
a triumphant chaos of repeating

there were banners hung from the tusks
my fingers had gone purple
from clutching the baskets next to me

American Gothic didn't have this many thorns
or any sepia tones to run on

i was welcomed in the house
i ate the cracker offered

the speech heated steadily
i found a pit of flower seeds

the displays had chanting
and chips of bone and silver

a collection for the prison
and dried hides of hunters

there wasn't an explosion
but then the ground bled

i swam through the cracks
all the plants had red stems

i want to be new
roll on straw
get my ribs bit by a tiger

I have memories about you, that cackle
i can see you bumming a cigarette from yr grandkids
with a sizzled mouth and string hair
when you're younger
you were spring in yr superhero underwear
but you couldnt be my life
we never paid rent to each other
and theres so many people
who dont know where to go to battle

i can climb
to the top of the bungalow
and jump off the 2nd level
kick my legs on the way down
wave to Mark Monday
and get strawberry italian ice after

i can climb
into a nova
yellow light shot onto wanda
and when my foot goes through the floorboard
i'll flag down a passerby
pay for a ride on the thresher

Wolves that land
can burst into fire
deer protect themselves
and bears break into grain silos
rabbits are the rats of the desert
and crawl to eat mice on the plains

When the evening is still and quiet
and the candles are glowing violet
the sultry air makes you
drop your cares, your doubts and your frowns
You descend the stairs and head into town

Walk through the leafy glade
float on the ground beneath you!
walk all night with your gaze
fixed on your lover's face

Sing a song of love
that you learned from above
dream of her caress, the nape of her neck
and know that you'll never part

When the evening is still and dark
light remains in your heart, you feel so free
smashing ennui, you could be
skipping stones, all alone and not mind

Walk through the leafy glade
float on the ground beneath you
picture her delicate face
and ring the bell at her gate

Sing her a song of love
feel your joy soar like a dove
and when you're at home, reading her poems
you know that you
have found someone who
can make all your dreams come true

WATER
water/water
water/water
water/water
water/water
water
water
water
I’d love to lie by the sea and feel motion evaporate
then solidify into a form we see in flux

or be on course to be boundless, and sing of the inspiration
aiming a voice at the sky, never again id read a tattered sign

my body no longer closed in the folds of dirt and clay, but windblown and
awake seeing droplets and rivers become oceans and lakes

the salt darting through the air, ends my hunger
it cleans the shore and creates the permanent structures
as the molecules become lighter and smaller

Dance in the water
woman and man
Thou shalt have a boat,
Thou shalt save a fish,
Thou shalt be steering
When the boat comes in;
Thou shalt have a vision up in the crow's nest
Dance in the water
woman and man

Dance in the water
dance for the birds
dance for the wind
dance for everyone on land

thou shalt see the king
before the revolt
thou shalt find a partner
one to love and to hold
man will be woman
and woman will be man
Dance in the water
to the perch and to the sand

I once lived on Salisbury Plain
we'd come from Ireland
and only ate grain
we changed their battle hymns
and substituted our names
we sang boldly
"We shall rule the waves never, never, never shall we be slaves"

We sailed to the pacific
fighting equinoctial gales
we felt liberated by the sight
of sharks, storms and whales
we gathered strength and survived
the death of captain McCaughey
for we would have been despised
by his ghost if we stopped facing the sea

Now we're outward bound toward The Gulf
to the Indies and back around
We'll gather gifts wherever we dock
and when we're headed homeward
I'll bring silver galore,
and a Persian cat and a camel fur
And you won't wear those cast-offs no more

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is rolling

It's a tough life
We merchants undergo
And we don't give a damn how hard the winds blow

The sailors give us a bad name
they let us to fall through the weary waves,
they throw a hatchet in the floor of their boat
and if it doesn’t sink you'll hear them gloat
but if we roar out of order
never again would we see the sea
no more, no more, no more

We sail with a northerly gale
to our island home in the county of Cork
Our mainmast sprung, our pitching done,
fire in our stomachs, salt water in our lungs

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is rolling

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is sailing

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is rolling

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is sailing

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is rolling

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is sailing

Now, haul away the bowline
The ship is rolling

ocean/ocean
ocean/ocean
ocean/ocean
ocean/ocean
ocean
ocean
ocean

endless ocean, endless ocean
I moved where I could be you
away from things I can't see through
I threw away my socks and shoes
to be waiting at your shore
endless ocean, endless ocean

my blood has departed
I stopped the things I'd started
my organs are unguarded
I see your waves get parted
by the tide and its rippling mood swings
endless ocean, endless ocean

you sing, you sing
so perfectly
I am in love
inside the cotton of your warmth
endless ocean

I'm calm and now I'm here
your reflection is so clear
the sky is just a mirror
an imitation of you
endless ocean, endless ocean

I don't need to talk
I found what I have sought
into you I will walk
endless ocean, endless ocean

MY FEELINGS ARE STARTING TO MERGE
Watching everything spreading together
moving out further & further
I’m stuttering like a muscle

I sweep & call past the buildings
dousing the ground in water
twisting through stillness & exhaustion

My weight is falling off
the vents in my chest are flooded

My feelings are starting to merge
where the lawn hits the glacier
before I go
I don’t understand
why the vampire
stood in a brush fire
instead of sucking oxygen
from the scarecrow’s finger
like Tuesday had stopped the
reverberating door reminded me
of a woman that I saw
her features replicating the dictionary

The room dripped lemon juice, the
furniture decades old
the orange light made Baxter’s biography
easier to read, he’d left a copy
w/ a note in German, his strewn equipment
played me at several speeds
I finished reading
and I spoke too loud for the speaker
to receive the sound
the signal, it crackled into the pores
of the shelves and back porch floor boards

Baxter’s beard was in the sink
his acquaintance slept annoyed in the aisle
I felt like Id gotten married
so I went through your sewing supplies
to see if Id left anything behind

But--- Theresa isnt here to think it through for me
you played me a private song
and the choruses rolled along until it started raining
I wondered where the teeth were that I
kept on a flower plate when Theresa held court on the roof

The late letter looks through a glass door
where the gypsies take over
and starve for onions
and Theresa explains her ideas

This is the brightest 7 o’clock
Ive ever seen
the sun won’t leave the buck moon

The Buck Moon will appear though
mercury trails connected to its craters
the soil touched by the light becomes
mortar and aluminum
which I’ll spoon up and leave in a medicine jar
alongside the liniment & syrup

Baxter leaves, takes his clothes off the wire
while he soaks to calm his superstitions

The Buck Moon hardly recognizes
the branches grown over & draping
themselves over the books shelves
the Unicycle was a gift
which I apparently hid under the plantation
so no archaeologists would ever steal it

You’ve got a stethoscope in yr hands
and yr forgetting how to talk
I feel yr hand on my head again
and see the creases in your age
I fall asleep after the international news
it appears I’m being kept open here

MILD LIFE
the hunter digs his way under the foliage,
he feels the knife securely tied to his thigh,
feels the wind against his camouflage
he is patient, he is rhythm, pieces of the sky land in his traps
he melts them down and drinks them for dinner
the hunter crawls to his plywood shack and
saves his venison for later
the next day he heads underwater at sunrise to catch
fish with his hands
mostly though, he's interested in laying face down
hoping to catch a turkey or uproot a tree for his home
he re-assembles his shack into a rowboat
and leaves it for someone to take
he walks 4.5 miles and hops on the scheduled open backed bus
on his way home, he updates his archives, regarding
the game he captured
his copious notes include details far beyond that of
size shape and weight
however, the longest and most personally relevant entries
are those where he
meticulously re-counts the manner in which
he triumphed over his environment

mark porter committed suicide on sunday
he had converted to islam to get married
he had lost his largest commission
his middle name was allen

Through the center of a branch
to the worm at the root
this paper dust was made for you, you being me

degrees falling making exhaust
more impressive than it seems
bark peeled down the tree
paintings dripping from their frame
teeth, a white yogurt on ash wednesday

call this stranger cuz the wheel is waiting for you
there's lice in the cabinet
chewing through to the roof

the dog barks at 6:10am
your shrieking wakes up 4
your persuasion has no outlet
your table and chairs are forgot
on the 16th
the roof is getting weaker
at the office, the copier
is out of toner until thursday
stay with me
stay with me

finger paintings line the attic
nonsensical shapes with
mis-spelled words
local men are firing blanks
while they leave for work

are they still speaking english?
they breathe very loud

glaciers are roaring
the flashpots in yr mind
no point is loaded
body hair grown
you become convinced
everyone wants you to win

THA-ZWI-I spent the day in a monotone mood watching commercials
watching anita bryant with four crew-cut men in 1965
in a cola-fueled christian clothes-on hitler youth orgy of the future
a future where only animals are nutritious
and crab grass causes cancer

underneath it ¼
underneath it, it is plain
underneath it, is reasonably explained
underneath it, it is yes and no
underneath it, it is wave and beat

underneath it is parted between elbow and shoulder as much time created
inside a shark
we gave him away to a fireman and we used to
wait on our stomachs
for our mother to come and father would get
quite annoyed it was when we had
even faces
the camp kept the blue dog that walked away

PEOPLE
I am a young man
closed off in this room
my name it doesn’t matter
Where I’m from, I can’t tell you
I always wanted to control my destiny
not share responsibility
so I could be free

They sent me off to college
so I could learn the law
I met a lot of people
each one with a different cause
I turned myself to physics and astronomy
to see if I could throw away
the seeds they had put in me

I drifted down to the South
and I saw it was vast
I memorized equations
on the eyeless ending sand
I knew that my superiors, they were very strong
they would put me up in space
and never steer me wrong

My expectations didn’t fly
they kept me on the ground
the paperwork was drafted
and I was shown around
they checked my past for arrests
my retinas were scanned
I hoped that there would come a day
when I could take command

They made me go and lock the doors
and cue the landing lights
it was a secret mission
in the middle of the night
the burners started blaring
I crawled inside my suit
knew I wouldn’t come back if they asked me to

I am a young man
closed off in this room
my name it doesn’t matter
Where I’m from, I can’t tell you
I always wanted to control my own destiny
wanted to go and vanish up in the slipstream

The emperor looked
at the head of the horse
lifted his hand
and picked out the brain
opened his mouth, and smeared the remains

he dressed his servants
as nymphs and pans
little boys in the nude
stayed in the pool
to bite on his body while he swam

his sister said
“if breath is a blade
then desire is the cage
claim your birthright
before you’re saved”

had his mother killed
made it a crime to laugh
attacked the statue
who’s clothes matched his own
his bleeding fists sunk into the gold

He memorized the
lives of the gods
Jezebel stole him a tunic
he began planning his burial
at night he debated with Jupiter

He saw Palatine Hill
the volcanoes were calm
before the christians burned
Diamond tipped shovels were used to pierce
the columns and arches
jewels and violins

The violins on Palatine Hill
played like birds colliding in the air
the torches flared
all the grain was set glowing

The senator’s body rolled back on the sheets
his speech a paused spasm
murmuring
“I’m nursing a viper”
The rest of the ward
willingly succumbed immediately

In the middle of the gymnasium
were booths with men
in bullet proof vests
distributing ballots and
voluntary vaccinations to
guard against contaminants
while in line you could
read pamphlets on the issues
or flip to photos of festering boils

it’s slippery and strange to walk alone
sealed lips will keep the borders closed
and no infestations will travel north
nothing to arrest security
just a cure to keep people
in the grasp of liberty

the medicine was made with
pearls dissolved in vinegar
the choice was made by pulling the lever
the searchlights were made for us by the protector

a thief entered
everyone was roused
the wife and kids looked to the head of the house
he opened his robe and threw a small bomb
later, standing over the intruder’s body
he thought through history
and spoke his favorite quote
“I want him to feel like he’s dying”

Free grain for everyone who asks
free grain for everyone who enters
wheat in exchange for marble
wheat for the state

she takes the leather
squirms in the saddle
the dust closes her eyes
I can see the red jacket from here

two girls climbed the stairs
very poised and aware
they’d been here before
the los angeles smog against their backs

two men arrived the next morning
to drop off a pair of glasses
and smear the window pane

the teenager can’t make a sale
so he packs up his stereo equipment
and his clock radio
exits past the telephone pole

when they were done
they sat in the kitchen
they carved up some watermelon
fed a slice to the couple’s dog
an hour later, they threw away their clothes

young man in the backyard
the owner doesn’t know he’s there
taking a drink from the garden hose
drops his flashlight on the ground
he dropped his flashlight on the ground

I'm overworked, overworked and still lazy, like momma would say
I see the same airport in every dream
all the people on the tarmac are all noisy
theyre paying close attention to the snow on the ground
theyre really straining themselves to see this snow
theyre all oblivious
oblivious to how tired they are
theyre basically, realy lazy
oh, I don't really want to talk anymore
orphan fix

did you see the parades
down state st
did you see the instant refraction of the sun?

leaping cardinals surround the
lush fields of green and brown and
soon they will be growing out and leave a scene of vines

muted cries under winter skies
become alive and starts streaming speech
keeping a transferred, blurring view

and was ripped apart, they were never jailed again

replacement folks in their town
sleeping splayed on the ground
