THE FIRST FOUR YEARS




PHILADELPHIA
I was in Philadelphia waiting for the maid
I glanced out the window
down at kids younger than me
looking like I did at 16
comparing biographies
completing each others fragments
exchanging glasses
freezing enzymes on magnets

I stopped by the swimming pool and
flicked a few crumbs out the water
the convention got post-poned into a parade
the police mis-placed the exit
and were unsympathetic
to the problems they had failed to protect

had fallen and cracked the liberty bell
whose continued drone
quit cell phones and traffic
and didn’t cease until a line
was cut to the Bryn Mawr bricks
which had gone unrestored since 1936

MY FEELINGS ARE STARTING TO MERGE
Watching everything spreading together

MILD LIFE
the hunter digs his way under the foliage,
he feels the knife securely tied to his thigh,
feels the wind against his camouflage
he is patient, he is rhythm, pieces of the sky land in his traps
he melts them down and drinks them for dinner
the hunter crawls to his plywood shack and
saves his venison for later
the next day he heads underwater at sunrise to catch
fish with his hands
mostly though, he's interested in laying face down
hoping to catch a turkey or uproot a tree for his home
he re-assembles his shack into a rowboat
and leaves it for someone to take
he walks 4.5 miles and hops on the scheduled open backed bus
on his way home, he updates his archives, regarding
the game he captured
his copious notes include details far beyond that of
size shape and weight
however, the longest and most personally relevant entries
are those where he
meticulously re-counts the manner in which
he triumphed over his environment

Greetings, glad you enjoy the show. You enthusiasm and terminology shows you to be the kind of conscientious, deep thinking individual we like to have as a part of the FLUXLIFE INC. audience. Not to say that anyone is ever excluded. Of course. Obviously.

Now, to the matter at hand. The foreign language sections of "Scatter" (as well as the foreign language sections numerous other works) are part of the artistic choices Richard Millett makes in the name of self expression. That is to say, the languages are chosen for a reason(s) and the reader isn't necessarily being deprived of any "deeper levels" by not being able to read those portions not in English. Having asked Rich about his use languages other then English on several occasions myself, I feel I can make a few comparisons that may be helpful. In music, various "noise" bands use distortion or feedback to generate what can be called "pure" sound. In film, a director may use light, editing or "still" camera techniques to heighten a story without having those elements written into the script or even paid attention to by the actors. In painting, there are several accepted methods and models for "pure" painting such as Action painting, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism etc. Rich feels that there is virtually no literary example of these complex methods, and has devised any number of formal methods since 2002 to bring "pure" writing to life. One of these is using foreign languages, another is the Search Engine As Language Synthesizer Method and yet another is building upon the foundations Gysin & Burroughs developed with their cut-up/fold-in Method. One exception regarding Rich's theories and execution however, is his belief that his work is not based on any form of "distortion" or even re-conceptualizing. He calls it "pure abstraction", thus placing the "abstractions" purely in line with the rest of the more accessible elements and sections of his work. So, what you find is language shifts, textural shifts, psychological shifts, motivational shifts, character shifts, time & place shifts, and of course structural shifts all happening in concordance with each other and not shunted off to one side in a pretentious attempt to be "daring" or "experimental". There is no experiment in this later work because there are no rules or previously established forms being adhered to, or thusly being rebelled against. To understand further, I cannot recommend enough reading Rich's work in order of its release beginning with Radar/Grain up to the present. Looked at from a purely technical standpoint his methodology across not just each book but each poem (or sometimes each verse or section) becomes quite clear.

Since we appreciate your genuine curiosity, I can give you a few hints as to what the non-English sections are all about (just don't tell Rich!). Remember, this is off the top of my head so if I leave anything it's purely unintentional. First off, the first extended section of Polish is either the Rosary or the entire Novena (which the Rosary is a piece of). If it isn't the entire Novena, it could e portions of the Rosary repeated. Rich had copied the prayer directly off a Catholic prayer translation page and when Rich flew the text into Scatter, the text was all staggered and jagged looking, Rich loved the way it looked and left it that way.

In the lower portion of the poem "Scatter" there is a "break-down" which I believe is in French. It's either French or Italian, and now that I think of it, Italian is more likely. Next to this on the right hand side of the page is more or less the English translation. There are a few key differences some of the phrases (though damn if I can remember them), so you may want to take that onto BabelFish or Alta Vista and translate it for yourself.

Also in the poem "Scatter" there is the term "Ka Ta", this is Japanese for "I win". "No goi ooh ooh ahh yakakakak" comes from a Boredoms web page, and was one fans attempt to decipher what Eye is singing on Super Roots 3. Rich loved it and copied it directly. Also, some of the English verses of the poem "Scatter" were actually written in English, translated into Japanese and translated back into English resulting in some truly bizarre syntax (the best example is to be found the "single" version of Scatter).

The poem "Transcript" (which was properly credited to Millett/Platek) results from Rich audio taping his Grandmother and then transcribing what he heard. This in conjunction with the shifts in language and use of cut-ups etc. is probably the "purest" example of "pure" language and 100% supports the metaphorical structures Rich had created. The only conscious "tampering" Rich did to this was to add the repeated variations on "gg" which was added because "gg" is the first thing that an infant Cassius Clay would say, and later as Muhammad Ali he claimed he was trying to say "golden gloves". Obviously, this use of "gg" works on many levels, it being both "pure" language, symbolic language, communicative language that cannot be understood by the listener (or reader in this case), prophetic language, as well as the parallel that Rich liked of having a baby trying to communicate up against his elderly grandmother trying to communicate.

"Transcript" of course also serves as the set up for Scatter's longest piece and also its finale "Over The Moon" (originally "Moon Psalm" interestingly enough). "Over The Moon" uses elements of Polish, Japanese, English, Marie Platek's "pure language". All of these are cut up and filtered through any number of effects/methods. Some cut-ups originate from Japanese factory websites. The handwritten portions in the middle of the -stream-of-expression/communication was intended to be there from the beginning but was the very last thing added to Scatter. The actual meter and form of the words was created about mid-way through the process. Many of the foreign language elements in "Over The Moon" derive from some 200 pages of prepared then cut-up text Rich created and does not hold much specific meaning seeing as Rich (probably) intended by this point of the book for all communication and all meaning to be exploding into the reader's consciousness. It is metaphorical as well as literal (it being a visual effect as well as a literary one, and a set-up of sorts for the more densely visual works he's currently pursuing). In other words, if you were to scan the pages into a computer and get a direct translation you would not find neatly composed sentences and phrases that Rich is "hiding". What can be illuminating however is what Rich chose to cut up...among these elements are--- any number of Buddhist texts, Google searches for the terms "Zen Transference", "Peace Experience", "Body Transfer", "New Language", in addition to Google searches for non-sepcific terms examples being "traveling outside of your veins" or "transcending time" or "time deterioration and memory resuscitation". Also there were Google searches for facts about oceans, lakes, veins, tunnels, quiet, factories, mass production, tree bark and so. These are not random examples just so you know. There were many others as well, but Rich had told me specifically about these. I know that "Zen Transference" was responsible for the most of the "Over The Moon" non-English sections, so much so that Rich had delete out certain recurring words and phrases for fear that the very long piece might be TOO long and repetitive.

Also, one final thought on cut-ups. Rich used this for far more than generating "chaos" or "pure" language. The section of "The Skin Diver" (I think it's Skin Diver!) that has the verses
"Those are bells bells broken bells" etc is actually entirely from cut-ups Rich made from every existing Darby Crash lyric. Some cut-ups are even more subtle and/or imperceptible with maybe one or two words or one short phrase out of perhaps upwards of 20 pages of collected text being the impetus or jumping off point for not only a verse, but in some cases for an entire extended section.

Yr a sincerely genuinely strange bird, Todtemann. Nonetheless thank you for the detailed explanation. I once ran into Millett sometime ago and asked him about scatter's foreign language portions to which he abided with a clear response. However since then--
Millett has published other foreign language pieces which were promptly followed by postings with translations. This led me to believe scatter's translations were out there as well.

In any case I am pleasd to view such satisfactory food for thought in substance and response. Its quite a pleasure to read over.
